Program 3, Episode 5: Your First Few Are Always Going to Suck

Download Video: MP4, WebM

This episode we start attaching metadata to our chapters and sections. We (meaning I) totally did this in maybe the last optimal way. This is the fun of prototypes, making mistakes in the first implementation allows for a more thought out product in the end. Plus now you know that we don't hide our mistakes :)

On our tangents include discussion about Four Loko, caffeine tolerance and energy drinks. We talk for a while about books, including The Hunger Games (keep in mind, this was recorded before the movie came out), Eragon, 1Q84, The Dark Tower Series, and some others. We talk a little about audio books and book narration, the Hero's Journey and story archetypes, the Sword and Laser podcast, the Kindle, Tablet computers, and comedy.

Program 3, Episode 4: Two Tired Guys Programming

Download Video: MP4, WebM

Today we talk about how we comment (or don't) our code. We tell each other some stories about showing other people how to code, and we deal with it when people ask us to write their code. There's a story about the “perfect&rdquol you might have when you're new. We complain a little more about back problems, and we talk about being the first one one a new system or releasing to a new platform.

The coding starts out a little slow today. We get quite a bit done by the time we're finished. We add the first of the parts you can actually write in, start an attempt to add formatting (and quickly put it off), and hook up saving and opening so we end up with a very basic book writing program. More to come.

Program 3, Episode 3: Sticking It All Up In There

Download Video: MP4, WebM

This is another one of those less visual episodes. We add the ability to create sections. Then we add the ability to change the names of chapters and sections.

We get navel gaze-y about programming and what we like and love about the process.

We also talk about roaming around Google Maps, Nathan Fillion, drinking games, and more about TV shows. A bit of a random episode this time.

Program 3, Episode 2: Booooooook

Download Video: MP4, WebM (Chrome)

In this episode we continue working on our writing program. It's a bit slow going as we get the data structure more or less finished up, and a test written for saving it to disk.

After serializing and deserializing (saving and loading), we work on building out the tree control: Adding the ability to add chapters.

Off topic, we talk about "magic" and fantasy in programming, and our thoughts on the topic. Ryan remembers a firefighter who died in the line of duty. We also talk about upcoming and current games we're excited about (Borderlands 2 and Star Trek Online). Then it's TV shows, kids on the Internet, tempermental Wisconsin weather, and phones.

So yeah, all over the place. We actually talk about other things too, but you'll just have to watch to find out.

Program 3, Episode 1: A Bit Ambitious

Download Video: MP4, WebM (Chrome)

A week late, here is the new program. This time we (unknowingly) kick off our first two day program.

The new program is a writing program, something that I (Matt) want to use for the next NaNoWriMo, once the after show pieces are done - That is to say, once it's past the prototype phase we do here on parallel programming

We go over the initial function specs for the program, along with some wishing for beyond the show. Then we get into the code and begin by building out a serializable data structure

Off Topic we talk about weekends, aggrivating drivers, nervous eye twitching, archery, target shooting, and the headphones of shame.
